Fashion's Dirty Little Secret

Here is a fact the fashion industry does not want you to know: Fashion is the number two most polluting industry on the planet. Let that sink in for a minute...there is Oil and Gas, then Fashion. There are a number of reasons for this, one being "Fast Fashion". These are items that are produced inexpensively and using poor quality fabrics. These clothing items quickly become faded, pilled, and worn out after only a few times wearing them. Fast Fashion also encourages rapid season turnover and trends. In order to keep up, you must purchase items frequently.

What can we do to help change this? Thankfully, there are lots of easy and simple ways to do our part in reducing this global problem:

  1. Buy better quality. These items may cost a little more upfront, but you will be able to wear them many more times.

  2. Shop Resale. This of course is my favorite reason! Fashionable up-cycling benefits all involved. Who doesn't love getting a great deal on a quality item? It's a bonus that you're also helping out the planet!

  3. Donate your clothing instead of throwing away. Even items that are stained or ripped can be repurposed. Donate them to your favorite thrift store, they will sell by the pound items unsuitable for selling and are reused to make other items such as fiberfill, stuffing, and rags. The proceeds are generally used by the thrift store to help your local community.

See?! Easy, right! Just another reason to shop local, and feel good about supporting your community.
